Chickpea snack brand, Hippeas has partnered with plant-based meat business, This to create a vegan smoky bacon flavoured version of its puff snacks, ‘Isn’t Smoky Bacon’.

The new chickpea-based product will achieve its meat-like taste using the same flavouring as This’ plant-based bacon and bacon lardons.

Available in Waitrose stores and via Hippeas’ website from this week, the 22g limited-edition packs have an RRP of £1.

As well as its vegan seal of approval, the non-HFSS products are gluten, palm-oil and MSG free while also containing 1.3kg of fibre, providing 3.7g of plant-based protein at 87 calories per serving.

“We are delighted to be launching this limited time only partnership with the team at This. As two of the UK’s leading plant-based food brands it made perfect sense for us to collaborate on our ‘This Isn’t Smoky Bacon’ flavour,” Hippeas CEO Paul Nardone said.

“The product delivers against what we know consumers are looking for: maximised flavour and texture, alongside revolutionised nutrition to deliver better-for-you snacks.”

This co-founder Andy Shovel added: “Everyone loves bacon, snacks and being healthy. The assignment was simple to comprehend but hard to execute. Kudos to the legends at Hippeas for smashing it – these puffs are 10/10.’’

In May, research conducted by Toluna found that 49% of 1,160 adults said they want to consume food and drink products that are healthier, vegan, and more sustainable.

The data also found that since 2019, the proportion of meat-eaters has reduced from 83% to 78% and 76% of the survey’s respondents had bought a plant-based alternative food.

This news follows This’ announcement last month that it is launching into its first new category with a range of innovative frozen food products designed to to appeal to Gen Z shoppers.
