Morrisons launches plastic-free toilet and kitchen roll packaging

Morrisons has launched paper-wrapped toilet and kitchen roll in a bid to reduce plastic waste and increase the recycling initiatives in customers’ homes.

Toilet and kitchen roll are the two most commonly purchased household items in the UK with 98% and 82% of customers respectively, placing them in their baskets weekly, according to the Big 4 grocer.

Compared to the plastic film packaging, the new paper packaging is FSC certified and 100% recyclable. The toilet paper and kitchen roll sheets are also made of 100% recycled paper.

The retailer has also assured “customers can save money” with their eco-products with two-pack jumbo kitchen rolls for just £3 and the nine pack pf toilet rolls for £3.50.

Morrisons has also made the production process of the products more sustainable and has opted to produce them with 100% renewable energy at local sites in the UK.

“Millions of toilet paper and kitchen rolls are bought every day in the UK. So if we can remove plastic entirely from these products – and if all customers bought these alternatives – we could save nine tonnes of plastic from being used a year,” Morrisons household buyerLeanne Jarrett said.

“We’ve priced our new eco products at only a fraction more than our standard ones, so that customers can affordably make the switch.”

The news comes as Morrisons was ranked below the other Big 4 grocers in Which? sustainability rankings, scoring 68%.

Additionally, the retailer has come under fire for “dramatically” increasing the prices of goods compared to their rivals – becoming the most expensive Big 4 grocer amid the cost-of-living crisis.

Currently, Morrisons jumbo Eco Kitchen Towels (two-pack) and Eco Toilet Rolls (nine-pack) can be purchased now in-store and online.
