M&S gives Colin the Caterpillar a LGBTQ+ makeover

Marks and Spencer has launched an LGBTQ+ edition of its iconic Colin the Caterpillar cake in time for Valentine’s Day, with same-gender versions of the ‘couples’ packs now available.

Last year, fans of the caterpillar cakes could buy both Colin and Connie in a pack for Valentine’s Day, but this year, not only can you still buy Colin and Connie together, but M&S are offering same gender pairings as well.

The new offer has been launched as part of LGBTQ+ history month and allows shoppers to buy two Connies or two Colins as part of the M&S Valentine’s Day range. The inclusive packs are currently available in-store or can be bought online.

The same-gender bundles have been introduced as M&S continues to strive to become a more inclusive brand, with its Valentine’s Day range also including cards for same-gender couples.

For Valentine’s Day, Colin – and Connie, of course – will be getting a seasonal makeover from the high street giant, with extra milk chocolate hearts and heart-shaped sprinkles adding a touch of romance to proceedings.

An instagram post from M&S Food read: “Colin the Caterpillar is now available in his first-ever same-gender pairing! For the first time ever at M&S you can pick your favourite pair with our half size Colin and Colin, Connie and Connie, or Colin and Connie.”

The iconic caterpillar cake has been the subject of much publicity over the past few months, following a legal battle with Aldi, when M&S accused the discount retailer of infringing its trademark with its Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake.

The disagreement was recently settled in court as part of a “confidential agreement”.
