Meat price inflation jumped in April, driven by “steep rises” across beef and lamb cuts, new data shows.

According to the Association of Independent Meat Suppliers (AIMS) Meat Inflation Tracker Report for April 2025, which is based on the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (ADHB)’s supermarket price tracker, fresh meat inflation increased by 11.53% year-on-year and by 3.48% for the month.

AIMS head of communications Tony Goodger said that the increase in meat price inflation is being driven by “12 months of steep rises” across beef and lamb cuts, up 20.96% and 19.92%, respectively.

“Consumers looking for the very best value should go for British farm assured chicken legs as they haven’t moved at all during the last month and are 5p/kg down (2.03%) year-on-year”, he suggested.

AIMS also found that British pork cuts such as belly slices, tenderloin and mince have also “dropped back slightly year on year”.

However, Goodger warned: “With the current hot weather and two bank holidays in quick succession I do expect demand for these lines to increase as households look to the barbecue for meal occasions”.

Earlier this week, new data from the British Retail Consortium (BRC)-NIQ Shop Price Index found that food inflation rose to its highest figure in almost a year this month as everyday essentials were hit by price rises.
