Following the success of its viral strawberry & cream sandwich, M&S is set to introduce a chocolate, strawberry and pistachio cream sandwich ahead of Wimbledon.

The retailer partnered with its long-term supplier Greencore to produce the new flavour after last year’s variant sold over 1 million sandwiches in five weeks.

Additionally, the viral strawberries and cream sandwich inspired by the British classic will be returning for the second year.

The product was created at manufacturer Greencore’s new dedicated nut production facility in Northampton, which was opened following a £900,000 investment.

According to the business, the facility was designed to allow M&S food-to-go products containing nuts to be made safely and at scale, supporting the launch of the new flavour.

The new chocolate, strawberry & pistachio cream sandwich is now available for purchase in M&S Foodhalls from today [24 June].

Alex Freudmann, MD of M&S Food, said: “Our long-term supplier partnerships are central to the transformation of M&S Food. They give us the confidence and capability to keep innovating at pace while investing with us in the quality, consistency and scale our customers expect from us.

“Greencore’s dedicated nut production facility at Northampton is a great example of that partnership in action – creating new capability in one of our fortress factories and helping us bring distinctive, market-leading products like our Chocolate, Strawberry & Pistachio Creme Sandwich to customers.”

This move is part of the retailer’s food transformation strategy which includes building long-term supplier partnerships and the businesses are exploring further development opportunities in the food-to-go ranges.
