Lidl’s Little Moons price comparison sparks supermarket row

Little Moons is set to slash jobs and close its new factory, mere months after it expanded production.

Lidl has sparked a pricing row after comparing its own-brand mochi ice cream with Little Moons, prompting Tesco to hit back over the discounter’s savings claim.

Posters displayed in Lidl stores compare its Gelatelli Mochi, priced at £3.45, with a £5 pack of Little Moons sold at Tesco.

The advertising claims shoppers can save around 30 per cent by switching to Lidl’s own-label alternative.

However, Tesco challenged the comparison as Little Moons Passionfruit & Mango Mochi is currently available to Clubcard members for £3.50 – just 5p more than Lidl’s product.

The loyalty promotion, which runs until 27 July, reduces the price from its standard £5 shelf price.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “There is no need to settle for a dupe when Clubcard members can get the original Little Moons Passionfruit and Mango Mochi for just £3.50 on Clubcard Prices.”

Lidl’s claim is based on Tesco’s standard price rather than the lower Clubcard offer, although customers must be members of Tesco’s loyalty programme to access the £3.50 deal.

Little Moons’ Passionfruit & Mango product contains six 32g mochi bites and is sold across several of the UK’s major supermarkets. The brand describes the product as vegan ice cream wrapped in sweet rice dough.

The mochi category has attracted growing competition from supermarket own-label ranges since Little Moons surged in popularity on social media, with Aldi previously launching a lower-priced alternative to the branded frozen snack.
