Delivery platform Just Eat expects an increase in ice cream orders and late-night dinners as the temperatures rise.

This comes after figures from the last heatwave, during the May bank holiday, showed a shift in what consumers ordered and what time they ordered items.

Over the May heatwave period, orders placed between 9pm and 11pm rose by 27 per cent with over 60,000 additional late-night dinner orders during that time.

There was a particularly high demand for ice cream, with orders containing ice cream surging by 53 per cent and the number of ice cream ordered going up by 79 per cent.

Additionally, shoppers were also craving lighter meals, with salad orders going up by 27 per cent during the May heatwave.

Caroline Bates, grocery and new verticals director at Just Eat UK, said: “When the temperature rises, our ordering habits change quickly. During the May heatwave, people pushed their dinner later into the evening, and summer salads became a staple.

“With another hot weekend on the cards, as well as lots of late-night football, we’re expecting more people to wait until the day cools down before ordering and plenty of customers swapping the oven for an ice cream tub or something lighter.”

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for London, much of the South East, and as far north as Manchester. A developing hot spell through Monday [22 June] and Tuesday will likely lead to widespread impacts on both consumers and infrastructure, with various warnings in place until Thursday.
