Aldi expects World Cup beer sales to top 74 million cans
Aldi is forecasting a major sales rush during the World Cup, with the discounter expecting to sell more than 74 million cans of beer over the course of the tournament.
The supermarket said the figure equates to more than 1,330 cans sold every minute between 11 June and 19 July, enough to line 72,705 football pitches end to end.
The forecast comes as retailers gear up for a summer of home viewing, with the World Cup running from 11 June to 19 July across the US, Canada and Mexico.
Aldi, which was recently named Which? Best Value Brand of the Year, said shoppers are expected to stock up heavily on beer, pizzas and snacks as fans host matchday gatherings at home.
Its beer range includes own-label lagers such as Sainte Etienne Premium Lager, priced at £3.39 for four 440ml cans, and Galahad Lager, priced at £2.99 for four 440ml cans.
The supermarket also expects to sell more than 14 million pizzas and over 9 million packs of crisps during the tournament.
Aldi said its Carlos Takeaway Pizzas, available in Meat Feast, Pepperoni and Big Cheese, are expected to prove popular with shoppers looking for easy matchday food.
The retailer is also pushing its Snackrite Deltas Tortilla Chips range, priced at 89p for 200g, in flavours including Cool, Salted, Chilli and Tangy Cheese.
Aldi said the range offers a 64 per cent saving compared with Doritos Cool Original, which is priced at £2.50 for 180g.
The forecast highlights the scale of the grocery opportunity around major sporting events, with supermarkets looking to capture demand from shoppers watching matches at home rather than in pubs or hospitality venues.
Aldi’s beers, pizzas and crisps are available in stores nationwide now.
