Royal warrant greengrocer near Balmoral goes up for sale

News

A Highland delicatessen and greengrocer with a royal warrant to supply King Charles has been put on the market.

Deeside Deli in Ballater, Aberdeenshire, is being sold for offers over £275,000, giving prospective buyers the chance to take on a food business with direct links to the royal household.

The independent family-run shop, located around eight miles from Balmoral Castle, carries the Royal Coat of Arms in Scotland on its frontage, alongside a sign stating its royal warrant by appointment to His Majesty the King.

The business supplies the King and his household when they stay at Balmoral during the summer.

Estate agent Laurie & Company described the sale as a “unique opportunity” to acquire a well-established delicatessen, greengrocer and florist with the “kudos of a royal warrant”.

The shop is located on Bridge Street in the centre of Ballater, a village closely associated with the royal family due to its proximity to Balmoral.

The deli sells seasonal fruit and vegetables, herbs, spices, jams, chutneys, cheeses, cooked and cured meats, soups, sandwiches, home baking and artisan breads. It is also licensed to sell alcohol.

The business also provides catering for events and functions, including corporate hospitality at the Ballater Highland Games, which is often attended by members of the royal family.

The sale includes the premises, fixtures and fittings, refrigeration equipment, supplier contact details and the owner’s recipes.

The shop has a retail area at the front, with a kitchen and preparation area to the rear. The first floor includes storage space and an office overlooking the village street.

The current owner is selling due to family commitments, according to the agents.

Laurie & Company said the business offered an “excellent work-life balance” in an area of outstanding natural beauty, as well as the chance to run a long-established local store with a loyal customer base.

Existing staff are expected to remain in their roles under TUPE regulations, which protect employee rights when a business changes hands.

Royal warrants are not guaranteed, however. Ballater butcher HM Sheridan previously supplied Queen Elizabeth II for decades before King Charles took his business elsewhere. The owners later retired amid speculation that the King preferred organic meat.

Balmoral has been part of the royal family’s Scottish life since the reign of Queen Victoria, with King Charles and Queen Camilla continuing the tradition of spending summers on the estate.
