Morrisons has announced plans to commit to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its full supply chain by 2050.

This new target marks a strengthening of the retailer’s climate commitments, with a new set of goals that have been formally approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

As part of the new plans, Morrisons has committed to decreasing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 80% by 2035 and by 90% by 2050.

Additionally, the company has grown its targets to include a 40% reduction in Scope 3 energy and industrial emissions by 2035.

The business said it has already made significant progress by decreasing the total carbon emissions by 22% since 2019. The change was driven by operational changes at the retailer, energy efficiency projects, and lower-carbon logistics in partnership with its suppliers.

Andrew Edlin, head of sustainability at Morrisons said: “The validation of these targets reaffirms Morrisons’ commitment to sustainability, and the move to a 2050 target across the full value chain is a big step forward in our journey to net zero.

“We are taking upstream and downstream emissions of our operations into account, including emissions created in making products, in our stores, in transport systems, and then end-of-life emissions too.”

The supermarket retailer plans to work alongside industry groups, suppliers and partners to support the changes for climate action.
