Central Co-op and Midcounties Co-op appoint CEO
Central Co-op and Midcounties Co-op have named Debbie Robinson, current CEO of Central Co-op, as the next chief executive.
The leadership for the newly joined society has been confirmed, with Elaine Dean, the current president of Central Co-op, appointed as the president of the new society.
Irene Kirkman, currently president of Midcounties Co-op, and Richard Bickle, currently vice president of Central Co-op, will support Dean in the roles of vice presidents.
Phil Ponsonby has been named the CEO for integration, where he will manage the process of bringing the two societies together.
Debbie Robinson, chief executive officer, said: “Creating our new Society is an enormously exciting opportunity. I am honoured to have been asked by the Board to take on the role of CEO and to help shape the future of a truly modern co-operative.
“The work to integrate our two organisations is already underway, and I am delighted to have Phil’s continued support through this next phase.”

Moving forward, the team will oversee a transitional board with directors from both societies.
The new appointments are set to take effect on 26 January 2026, after the legal merger of the two companies is completed.
Dean said: “The decision to bring together our two fantastic societies has been led by our members, and the high levels of engagement and support throughout this process are a testament to the power of co-operation.”
The new deal will lead to the formation of the largest UK co-operative society.
