Aldi renamed UK’s cheapest supermarket

Aldi was named the UK’s cheapest supermarket in November, by Which?.

Last month discount retailer Lidl was named as the cheapest supermarket based on a shopping list of 70 items.

The average price for a basket at Aldi was £121.22, which was £1.18 lower than Lidl and 5p less for shoppers part of the Lidl Plus loyalty scheme.

Supermarket retailer Asda was the third cheapest supermarket at £133.59, followed by Tesco with a Clubcard at £133.65 and £136.20 without a Clubcard.

Morrisons followed with a basket priced at £137.40, and Sainsbury’s with and without a Nectar card added up to £137.77 and £141.62, respectively.

Retailers Ocado and Waitrose were the two most expensive supermarkets that month at £154.37 and £166.79, respectively.

The research also found that as part of the longer shopping list, excluding discounters Aldi and Lidl, Asda was named the cheapest traditional supermarket retailer.

Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons with clubcards were the next most affordable traditional supermarket retailers.

The most expensive supermarkets for the longer list of groceries were Sainsbury’s without a loyalty card and Waitrose at £507.24 and £522.91, respectively.
