M&M’s announces ‘urgent recall’ over undeclared peanut and gluten risk

News

Shoppers in the UK are being warned not to eat a recalled M&M’s product after food safety officials flagged a potentially serious allergen risk.

3D Trading is recalling M&M’s Pipoca (popcorn) after it emerged that the product, which was manufactured for the Brazilian market, contains allergens that are not declared on the UK label.

According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the affected product contains peanuts and gluten, and may also contain barley, rye and wheat. Those ingredients are not listed on the UK packaging, creating what the regulator described as a possible health risk for anyone with a peanut allergy, an allergy or intolerance to barley, rye, wheat or cereals containing gluten, or coeliac disease.

The recall applies only to 35g bags of M&M’s Pipoca carrying a 3D Trading ingredients label, with all batch codes and best before dates included.

In a notice issued by the FSA, the agency said: “3D Trading is recalling the above product from customers and has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall.

“The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers. These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.”

The FSA added: “This product contains peanut and gluten and may contain barley, rye and wheat making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to peanut, an allergy or intolerance to barley, rye, wheat or cereals containing gluten or with coeliac disease.

“If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to peanut or an allergy or intolerance to barley, rye, wheat or cereals containing gluten, or coeliac disease, do not eat it.”

The recall is the latest reminder of the risks retailers and suppliers face when product information is not communicated accurately and quickly across the supply chain.
