Lidl was named the cheapest supermarket in the UK in July, ahead of its rival Aldi for the first time since October 2023, according to new data by consumer analysis group Which?.

The research revealed that Lidl’s average basket price for 76 items was £128.40, lower than Aldi’s price at £129.25. Asda was the third cheapest, costing 9% more than Lidl.

Tesco with a loyalty card followed at £141.92, with Sainsbury’s with a Nectar card next at £144.21.

Morrisons with a Clubcard and Ocado were on the higher end of grocery prices at £147.84 and £159.20 respectively. Meanwhile, Waitrose was named the most expensive supermarket with an average of £170.91, which is 33% higher than Lidl.

The same study – excluding Lidl and Aldi – was taken with a larger shopping list of 192 products; Asda was the cheapest with an average of £474.12, ahead of Tesco with a Clubcard at £481.59.

Sainsbury’s with a Nectar card, Morrisons with a More card and Ocado followed at £490.64, £491.87 and £521.72, respectively.

Waitrose was also the most expensive in the broader category with an average grocery price of £538.33.

Additionally, the data revealed that shoppers can get more discounts when using loyalty cards to buy products, with 6.3% more savings at Tesco and 6.7% at Sainsbury’s.
