Aldi debuts aluminium own-label wine bottles in supermarket first
Aldi has launched aluminium own-label wine bottles, as it aims to further reduce its carbon footprint.
The discounter has partnered with climate-friendly packing provider Broadland Drinks for the the supermarket-first initiative.
Available from 14 April, Costellore Pinot Grigio (£5.99, 75cl) weighs 95g. The bottle is almost 75% lighter than a standard glass alternative and is fully recyclable.
“Our buying teams are constantly exploring ways to offer greater value and greener choices for our customers,” said Aldi UK chief commercial officer Julie Ashfield.
“Shoppers are looking for ways to make a difference, and we’re proud to be leading the way with innovations like this aluminium wine bottle, building on our commitment to sustainable packaging.”

Broadland Drinks commercial director Catherine Smith added: “We’re delighted to partner with Aldi on the launch of the aluminium wine bottle. This initiative fits perfectly with our ambition to reduce our own carbon footprint and work with our retailers to make their businesses more sustainable.
“We know the biggest factor in a bottle of wine’s carbon footprint is the bottle itself, so by switching from glass to aluminium, we can help meet the rising demand for alternative lower carbon formats.”
The new product launch follows a number of innovations within the wine bottle packaging category. Last month, Aldi removed the protective sleeves from the corks of its own-label wine range, in a UK supermarket first, while in January it debuted a new own-brand Chardonnay that aims to support the removal of plastic from the ocean.
In 2024, Aldi launched the UK’s first supermarket own-brand flat, fully recycled PET wine bottles, in a bid to optimise space in-store and in storage.
