Asda is considering moving some jobs overseas in its latest bid to cut costs.

The grocer has opened a collective consultation with 26 junior colleagues in its social media department about potential changes to their role, which could see the jobs being cut and shifted overseas, The Telegraph reported.

It is understood that these colleagues typically respond to customer queries received via social media platforms and that this consultation does not affect any other colleagues in Asda’s customer service centre.

An Asda spokesperson said: “As more customers choose to engage with us in different ways, we are proposing to make some changes to our online customer services team to support this changing dynamic.

“We have opened a consultation with a small number of colleagues affected should this proposal go ahead, and our priority is to do all we can to support them during this process.”

The consultation follows a number of recent changes brought in by executive chairman Allan Leighton to turnaround the struggling grocer.

Last week, Asda warned of softer profits in the year ahead, as it embarks on a “substantive and well backed programme of investment in price, availability and the shopping experience” to regain customer trust.
