Morrisons has launched scan and go at six stores as part of a nationwide trial of the new technology.

The supermarket giant said it was debuting the technology to gauge customer responses, reported The Grocer.

The technology has become commonplace in grocery after its introduction around ten years ago, and is used widely by supermarkets including Tesco, which has a ‘Scan As You Shop’ service, and Sainsbury’s, which operates ‘Smart Shop’.

It comes as Morrisons CEO Rami Baitiéh revealed last month that the supermarket was to uninstall some of its self checkouts after he admitted the technology had gone a “bit too far”.

Baitiéh said around 20 stores across its estate will have to increase the number of manned tills to add “balance” against self checkouts.

Pointing to one example, a store in Brough in Yorkshire, Baitiéh said staff and shoppers were “very satisfied with the change” that saw some self checkouts replaced with four new manned tills.
