Aldi retains crown as UK’s cheapest supermarket
Aldi has been named the UK’s cheapest supermarket in July, costing £113.87 on average for 65 items, according to Which?.
The consumer watchdog found that in comparison to Waitrose, which was found to be the most expensive supermarket at £146.98, Aldi was £33.11 cheaper and across a six month period, shoppers could have saved £884 by switching from the upmarket retailer to the German grocer
Rival discounter Lidl was just £2.37 more expensive at £116.24, followed by Asda at £125.61.
When comparing the price of 65 items at Tesco and Sainsbury’s compared with the supermarket’s loyalty scheme prices, Which? found that Tesco Clubcard offered the lowest cost at £125.61, followed by Sainsbury’s Nectar at £129.81.

When removing the loyalty scheme savings, the 65 items cost £130.27 at Tesco, in comparison to £134.41 at Sainsbury’s.
Elsewhere, Morrisons was found to be slightly cheaper than Sainsbury’s at £133.28, while Ocado was the second most expensive supermarket before Waitrose at £140.76.
Commenting on the results, Aldi UK managing director of buying Julie Ashfield said: “We’ve always promised our customers that we will never be beaten on price and the latest Which? analysis has shown just how much shoppers can save when they shop at Aldi.
“Over the course of the past six months shoppers could have saved a significant amount, showing that when it comes to price – nobody can match Aldi.”
