Getir prepares to withdraw from UK market

Rapid delivery service Getir is understood to be preparing to withdraw from the UK market in a move expected to put approximately 1,500 jobs at risk.

According to Sky News, company insiders have said that the delivery giant is preparing to announce next week that it will withdraw from the UK, alongside two of its other remaining European markets – Germany and the Netherlands.

It comes amid a turbulent week for Getir, after sources close to the company revealed that the firm was exploring the sale of some of its assets after its “make or break” crisis talks escalated.

Among those contemplated by its shareholders, US online grocer FreshDirect was thought to be up for consideration – despite Getir only acquiring the company from Ahold Delhaize in November 2023.

In recent days, the business, which currently has a multi-million pound commercial partnership with the Premier League’s Tottenham Hotspur, is also understood to have drafted in restructuring firm AlixPartners in advising on Getir’s position.

The latest news follows in the wake of a challenging year for the grocery delivery giant.

Late last year, its value dropped to $2.5bn as shoppers moved away from convenience and as UK supermarket giant’s opened their own rapid delivery services, such as Tesco’s Whoosh, Sainsbury’s Chop Chop and Zoom by Ocado.

Grocery Gazette has contacted Getir for comment.
