Getir has acquired New York City-based online grocery company FreshDirect from grocery retail group Ahold Delhaize.

The ultrafast delivery company said the acquisition, which is expected to complete this month, will lead to significant synergies with FreshDirect and emphasises its strategic ambitions to grow in the US.

FreshDirect will leverage Getir’s technology and operational footprint to offer faster services to its customer base, which will also benefit from easy access to Getir’s quick convenience service.

FreshDirect will enable Getir to further increase the quality and breadth of its product range.

Following the closing of the acquisition, FreshDirect will retain its brand name and continue to operate out of its facility in the Bronx, New York City.

Both companies’ customers will continue to receive the same service as before.

This comes as Getir and Uber have launched a new partnership that will enable customers in several European countries to order Getir’s selection of groceries from the Uber Eats app.

The collaboration went live in the delivery firm’s UK dark stores in September.
