Asda apologises as underpaid workers left in the dark

Asda has apologised after workers blasted the supermarket claiming that they still have not been paid, following an IT malfunction last week that led to “a pay discrepancy” for some hourly paid colleagues.

While the grocer’s bosses said they were “making the relevant adjustments to ensure that colleagues receive payment,” a number of workers claim to still be waiting for payment, a week after the issue was first identified, with one labelling the delay as “wage theft”.

A worker told Grocery Gazette they were “down three weeks wage” and were unable to “get anywhere with replies” from the supermarket.

Another employee said yesterday “five days after pay day and no wages at all” while one worker said that they were “still half [their] wages missing”.

Other complained of lack of information on when the issue would be rectified.

“Wages are not being corrected and there is no information in store on how to deal with it,” said one employee. “Wage theft I call it!”

The pay delay has caused disruption to a number of hourly paid workers, some of whom said they’d missed bill payments.

An employee told Grocery Gazette’s sister publication Retail Gazette: “Missing £827 from my wages. Rent direct debt has been declined. Management haven’t got a clue what to do. Surely this is illegal. Cannot contact HR directly as have to go through store managers. I’m just going round in circles. Angry, upset and ashamed at having to tell my landlord that I can’t pay my rent due to Asda not paying me.”

A spokesperson for the supermarket said: “While the majority of Asda’s 150,000 colleagues were paid correctly this month, we know there have been discrepancies for some hourly-paid colleagues.

“We sincerely apologise to those affected and want to reassure them we are proactively resolving this issue by making additional payments as soon as possible.”

The IT issue followed Asda moving to a new HR system as it transitions away from its former owner Walmart’s technology.

  • We are now into week 2 of this being unresolved, still many staff members now had their pay, or had missing pay sorted out. No wonder staff retention is so poor at these places, they just don’t care.
