Co-op moves IT to the cloud to reduce energy usage

Co-op has expanded its partnership with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to move to the cloud to help reduce its carbon footprint and support business growth.

The convenience retailer will be upgrading its IT systems from a traditional data centre model to a fully managed, scalable cloud environment powered by TCS Enterprise Cloud.

The migration to a cloud-first strategy will help Co-op to enable a foundation for future capabilities and growth, while reducing energy usage in its data centres.

Co-op Group chief digital information officer Rob Elsey said: “We are delighted to extend our strategic partnership with TCS in enabling us to meet Co-op’s business objectives and serving and supporting our member-owners who are at the very heart of our business.”

Over the course of the 14-year partnership, TCS has supported Co-op’s retail business transformation, core system transformation and franchise programme, helping the retailer to accelerate time to market and create new revenue streams.

Elsey added: “They have been a great partner, aligned with our growth priorities and future-proofed our infrastructure as we set on the course for continued future expansion – supporting change and transformation in how we work as a business and in our cloud journey.”

The IT change comes after the grocer recently updated its advertising capabilities, having launched the UK’s first convenience retail media network, which will improve relevancy for shoppers and help brands reach wider audiences.

The Co-op Media Network brings together the convenience retailer’s in-house team and long-term retail media network agency partner Threefold under one recognisable brand identity.
