Ocado and Community Shop launch ‘On the Go’ van pop-up for struggling families

Ocado Retail has partnered with Community Shop to launch a new mobile pop-up shop from a van that will help feed struggling families.

Targeting six of England’s most deprived communities, the new ‘On the Go’ service will enable families to pick up a shopping basket of staple food and household products for as little as £3.

Ocado has donated an ‘On the Go’ van, which will act as a fully stocked mobile shop, while the food is surplus products donated by retailers.

The pop-up aim to expand social supermarket Community Shop’s reach and work with businesses to redirect surplus and tackle unnecessary food waste.

Ocado retail general counsel and chief people officer Jonathan Wiseman said: “Ocado has worked with Community Shop for many years now and we know what a huge difference the service makes to communities up and down the country. We’re looking forward to continuing to support this fantastic charity.”

Community Shop executive chairman Gary Stott said the initiative will “expand our efforts to tackle food waste across the nation, and bring vital food access and educational support to families”.

“Reflecting on a decade of Community Shop, we have seen just how much of a difference our Community Hubs and Kitchens make to families and those struggling with food insecurity. However, we know there is more to be done, and we are committed to bringing the impact of our stores to as many people as possible through our ‘On the Go’ programme,” he added.
