Greggs opens first café inside Sainsbury’s store

Greggs has launched its first cafe inside of a Sainsbury’s store in Sheffield, extending the partnership between the two retailers.

The new café is the third Greggs shop to open in partnership with Sainsbury’s – following the first successful launch in a petrol forecourt space earlier this year – and has launched in Crystal Peaks retail park, Yorkshire, creating 15 new jobs for the local area.

The partnership will enable customers shopping at the big 4 supermarket to choose from Greggs favourites, including freshly prepared sandwiches and bakes, freshly ground Fairtrade coffee and sweet treats.

Open from 7am-7pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am-4pm on Sundays, the café also gives customers the option to sit in or takeaway.

Both retailers claim they plan to launch more sites together by the end of this year, which will include both petrol stations and cafés.

Furthermore, reducing food waste is a top priority for the retailers, as they are both connected to food donation networks comprising hundreds of local charities – such as Neighbourly – allowing them to redistribute any surplus food from their stores.

Property director at Greggs, Tony Rowson said: “Our first Greggs café with Sainsbury’s is helping us continue to expand and diversify our retail estate as part of our ambitious property strategy.

“The opening will allow us to provide Greggs favourites to even more customers, in a format that complements Sainsbury’s Crystal Peaks store.”

Director of commercial partnerships at Sainsbury’s, Elizabeth Newman commented: “We’re delighted to have welcomed Greggs to another Sainsbury’s store, this time in the form of a fantastic café concept that represents another first for our customers.

“Greggs has proven very popular at Sainsbury’s petrol station in Biggleswade and we’re expecting the new café in Crystal Peaks to build on its success – I’m really looking forward to hearing what our customers think.”

Greggs first announced that it was set to launch standalone cafés and concessions in Sainsbury’s stores back in July, as it looks to expand its existing retail partnerships.
