Aldi to open 500 more UK stores as it rolls out 1,000th site

Aldi has unveiled a new long-term goal of opening 1,500 UK stores as its 1000th location in Woking, Surrey opened its doors today.

This comes as part of a £1.3bn two-year investment plan to meet growing consumer demand as two thirds of Brits now shop at the discount grocer.

Before the end of 2023, Aldi aims to open a further 20 stores as it searches for new locations.

Aldi UK and Ireland chief executive, Giles Hurley, said: “Opening our 1,000th store is a huge milestone and wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our 40,000 incredible colleagues.

“Our popularity is growing, and there is huge demand for people to have an Aldi store near to them to increase shoppers’ access to our unbeatable prices.

“The next phase of our expansion will involve another 500 new stores over the coming years. It is a long-term target and is not a ceiling to our ambition to have an Aldi store close to everyone in the UK.”

This comes as the retailer unveiled plans last month to hire more than 1,700 workers by the end of the year amid its rapid expansion drive.

According to The Times, the discounter claims the recruitment drive includes full-time and part-time positions at its regional warehouses, with salaries of up to £53,000 a year.
