Waitrose stores stock up on breakfast items ahead of World Cup Final

Waitrose stores have stocked up on breakfast items such as bacon, eggs and sausage ahead of the kick off of the World Cup Final this weekend.

According to the upmarket retailer, Sunday morning promises to be the ‘biggest breakfast of the year’ as football fans gather to watch England be in for a chance of winning their first World Cup title since 1966.

Waitrose claim that Uber Eats and Deliveroo orders are set to be in high demand, as searches on Waitrose for ‘brunch’ are already up 54% on last week.

At the same time, Tesco found that a number of items are expected to see high sales such as BBQ Meat (+120%), Ice Cubes (+140%), Coleslaw, Salad and Dips (+40%) and Champagne and Prosecco (+30%). Meanwhile, Spanish Cava is predicted to see a 30% rise.

Sales of children’s football boots in John Lewis department stores are also up 115% this week, while sales of TVs have jumped 25% on last year.

In contrast to 1966 – when an England team last reached a World Cup Final – far more people are expected to be watching the tournament at home with family and friends this Sunday.

Customer director at Waitrose, Nathan Ansell, said: “All the ingredients for a great brunch will be flying off the shelves quicker than a Lauren Hemp strike.

“Customers are already looking to celebrate with cooked breakfasts – and some chilled fizzed in readiness for a potential win.

“We expect Deliveroo and Uber Eats to be busy with enthralled fans unable to tear themselves away from the action to secure their last minute snacks.”

In total, retailers are estimated to earn £463m in sales as consumers stock up for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

According to a new spendings report, approximately 7.1 million Brits are said to be tuning in across the nation to watch the match fixtures.
