PM to meet with supermarket bosses and farmers as food inflation hits record high

Prime minister, Rishi Sunak is set to meet with farmers and supermarket bosses amid double-digit inflation and rising food prices.

According to reporting by The Grocer, the meeting will be taking place on 16 May and is likely to look into the demands of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU), including boosting home-gown food production.

It will also be focusing on the relationship between farmers and the UK’s leading supermarkets.

The NFU is hoping the meeting will help to better support farmers and increase the UK’s food security.

Originally planned to be held towards the end of this year, it is understood that the date of the event was brought forward in light increasing levels of inflation.

Last month, food inflation saw a new record high as the average price of food and non-alcoholic beverages saw the biggest increase in over 45 years.

The latest BRC-NielsenIQ shop price index found that food prices rose by 15.7% and fresh food prices soared by 17.8% year on year.

However, British Retail Consortium chief executive, Helen Dickinson said that food prices are likely to drop in coming months “as the cut to wholesale prices and other cost pressures filter through.”
