Diversity in Retail, an organisation which supports retailers to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace, has today announced Tesco as a member.

The Big 4 grocer, who employ over 345,000 employees, is the 28th retailer to join the organisation.

“Tesco is pleased to be joining Diversity in Retail. We’re committed to building an inclusive workplace where everybody feels welcome and colleagues can be at their best,” said Tesco’s UK and ROI CEO Jason Tarry.

“Joining this community represents a great opportunity to work with other businesses to share best practice and learnings that can help shape our approach to diversity and inclusion,” he added.

Other members of the inclusion focused organisation, which was set up in 2021, include Sainsbury’s, Asda and the John Lewis Partnership.

“From the outset, Diversity in Retail was focused on helping companies across the retail industry to build diverse and inclusive organisations,” said Diversity in Retail founder and chair Tea Colaianni.

“We set ourselves the goal of positively impacting over one million employees globally by 2025 so delivering on this ambition two years ahead of schedule marks a huge milestone. We are also thrilled to be welcoming Tesco as our newest member.

“With Tesco’s dedication to the diversity agenda we are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and the progress we can make by working together,” she added.

The diversity group has now surpassed its target of impacting a million employees two years ahead of its 2025 aim.

Grocers like Tesco and Asda – who lost a Supreme Court case around equal pay in 2021 – have been faced with a need to address diversity issues in recent years.
