Morrisons urged to improved animal welfare conditions after ‘refusing’ to act

Morrisons has come under fire and is being urged to sign an animal welfare policy to improve its animal welfare conditions, after allegedly “refusing” to act on it.

The supermarket is now being asked to follow M&S, Waitrose, and over 570 companies to sign the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC), an animal welfare policy that prohibits the use of fast growing breeds and crowded conditions.

As part of the criticism, supporters of an animal protection organisation named Open Cages plastered a ‘Frankenchicken’ image on the window of a Morrisons store in central Manchester, and inside two adjacent bus stops.

The original image was covertly shot by Open Cages on a Morrisons chicken supplier farm.

The posters – which show a severely injured chicken in a Morrisons supplier factory – have remained up since 1am.

The ‘Frankenchickens’ were found deformed and dying from “extreme” welfare problems. Dead bodies were found left to rot on the faeces covered floor.

The news comes as local protesters from Open Cages occupied the front entrance of a Morrisons store last month, criticising the supermarket for its animal welfare promises.

It’s absolutely disgusting how @morrisons thinks they can get away with treating chickens like that, chickens haven’t done anything to us so why do they think that they have the right to treat them like scum?
