George at Asda reduces suppliers to ‘drive significant growth’

Asda clothing brand, George has reduced the number of suppliers it works with and limited order volumes to “drive significant growth” across its business.

According to reporting by Drapers, George at Asda vice president, Karl Doyle said in an email to the suppliers impacted that it would be moving production and sourcing of its women’s swimwear, adult footwear and accessories to Hong Kong-based supplier, Li & Fung.

The Big 4 grocer has said as a result, this could help to “grow the George business in key areas”.

“We are working in partnership with a number of key suppliers including Li & Fung to continue to grow the George business in key areas,” an Asda spokesperson told Drapers.

“Li & Fung have significant expertise in these product areas, and we believe that this new smart simple approach will drive significant growth both in store and online.”

Asda added that this will allow the George business to “focus our energies and expertise on our clothing categories.”

This comes as George launched an adapted clothing range in support of independent dressing for children and young people with disabilities earlier this month.

In a supermarket first, Asda revealed that it is creating a collection of everyday casualwear specially adapted to make independent dressing easier for those with additional needs and reduced mobility.
