Tesco and M&S pledge combined £150k to earthquake appeal

Tesco and Marks and Spencers has donated a total of £150,000 to The Sun’s Earthquake Appeal.

Big 4 grocer pledged £100,000 and Marks and Spencers £50,000 to the emergency fund.

“Tesco fully supports this appeal and has committed to donate £100,000 to support the essential relief efforts of the British Red Cross,” Tesco UK and ROI and Jason Tarry said.

M&S has also donated 5,000 thermals to the cause.

M&S CEO Stuart Machin added that the disaster felt close to home as the business has “many teams based in Turkey”.

In a tweet, Machin said: “The situation in Turkey & Syria is absolutely terrible.

“Sending our thoughts and condolences to M&S teams & suppliers based in Turkey and anyone affected by the devastating earthquakes”

Over the weekend the area of Turkey and Syria was hit by a earthquake, with 5,000 people dying around the region. 

The news comes as M&S revealed the food arm of the business “outperformed” over the Christmas period, as it reported “strong growth” across the company.

In the 13 weeks to December 2022, the retailer saw a 10.2% rise in food sales, with like-for-like sales increasing by 6.3%.
