A threat of strike action involving Asda HGV drivers in the run-up to Christmas is no longer going ahead after an agreement was made with trade union Unite.
The supermarket chain was previously facing the threat of strike action by more than 80 HGV drivers based at Asda’s Wincanton’s depot in Rochdale, who were balloting for industrial action in a dispute over pay.
New negotiations were held after the announcement of the ballot by Unite last month, with the union reaching a “vastly improved” deal of a 9.5% increase in pay, with drivers now earning a basic hourly rate of £14.97.

The HGV drivers transport goods all across the UK to a range of Asda’s food distribution centres – going as far north as Scotland and Bristol in the south.
A Wincanton spokesperson said it was “pleased to have reached a resolution that satisfies all parties.”
“This was an important win for our members at Wincanton, who were not prepared to endure low pay rates any longer,” said Unite general secretary Sharon Graham.
“Unite’s commitment to always focus on the jobs, pay and conditions of its members is paying off.”
Unite regional officer Kenny Rowe also commented: “The pay deal was a significant victory for our members on the Wincanton Asda contract. Unite will be looking to build on this pay deal in future negotiations.”
