Food bank volunteers join campaign to fight the cost-of-living crisis

A national campaign to fight the cost-of-living crisis has been announced through the support of food bank volunteers, unions, community organisations and MPs.

The ‘Enough is Enough’ campaign has five demands to help those struggling across the UK including, an end to food poverty, a pay rise for all, a slash in energy bill prices, decent homes for all and greater taxes on the super-wealthy.

In a bid to tackle hunger across the nation, the campaign will see food collected for those in need as well as building community groups to help those also suffering from rising bills and poverty wages.

Launching today (8 July) via video, the campaign is being supported by Liverpool-based food donation initiative, Fans Supporting Foodbanks, community organisation, ACORN, MPs including Zarah Sultana and Ian Byrne, alongside many other industry figures.

Looking to reach its demands, Enough is Enough will be holding large-scale rallies across the UK within coming weeks with over 50 campaigning branches assisting striking workers by encouraging the public to support picket lines and back workers’ strike funds.

The campaign’s branches are expected to at least double within its first seven days as support amounts.

“Our communities are being overwhelmed by a crisis unlike anything most of us have seen,” Fans Supporting Foodbanks organiser, Dave Kelly said.

“Millions cannot afford to put the heating on or a meal on the table. After a decade of austerity and with the cost-of-living crisis biting ever deeper, working-class communities face the worst humanitarian crisis in our lifetime.

“With record levels of fuel and utility charges – and food prices rocketing – we know that Britain isn’t eating. The time is now to stand as one.”

CWU general secretary, Dave Ward added: “There’s always another crisis, and workers always pay the price.”

“We’ve suffered the biggest pay squeeze in history, and work has become all about working harder and faster for less. Now they want workers to pay for it all over again – we think it’s time someone else paid the price.

“Workers always make the sacrifices, yet the CEOs always reap the rewards. Fair pay, affordable bills, enough to eat and a decent place to live – these things aren’t luxuries, they’re your rights.”
