Morrisons launches £5 cafe meals for customers ‘on a budget’

Morrisons has rolled out a new midweek meal scheme offering customers discounted menu items in a bid to help out households and families who are ‘on a budget’.

With each meal priced at £4.99, the nationwide initiative will help to feed families who are ‘on a budget’ as both inflation and food prices continue to rise.

Available across all 406 Morrisons cafés, a ‘daily special’ will be discounted from 3pm seeing savings of up to £3.89 on the individual product price. Children eat for free all day with the purchase of one adult meal, meaning a family of four could eat for £9.98.

The move comes as Aldi is widely being predicted to overtake Morrisons as the UK’s fourth largest supermarket in less than a year, according to data taken from the most recent Kantar results.

The most recent take-home grocery figures were released last week, revealing that Aldi has claimed UK market share of 9% – just behind Morrisons which had 9.6% in the 12-week period to 12 June.

“We know how hard it is for our customers at the moment and we want to make sure they are still able to enjoy a meal out, even on a budget,” Morrisons head of cafés Ali Lyons said.

“We’ve handpicked these favourites so that no matter what day it is, our customers can enjoy a saving.”

Each of the Big 4 grocer’s meal deals includes a drink and can also be purchased as a vegetarian alternative such as mac and cheese, onion quiche and a vegetarian burger.

The ‘meal of the day’ will rotate every week day offering a selection of meals including beer-battered fish and chips, chicken tikka masala, British roast chicken or British cheeseburger both served with chips and coleslaw and a nine-piece breakfast brunch.

The news comes as Morrisons group commercial director, Andy Atkinson resigns as the Big 4 grocer scraps the position.
