Babybel to unveil new vegan cheese in time for Veganuary

Babybel is releasing a vegan version of its classic cheese snack in time for Veganuary 2022.

The new plant-based option will be wrapped in green wax, to differentiate from the original red

Sold in recyclable packaging, the vegan cheese will hit Sainsbury’s store across the UK on January 1. The products are expected to be rolled out across other supermarkets soon after the initial Sainsbury’s launch.

The cheese is made using a Vegan Society-approved blend of coconut oil and starch, is a source of calcium and Vitamin B12, and is free from preservatives and artificial colours.

Parent company Bel Group described the new product as “perfect for vegans and those looking to enjoy a delicious snacking experience while reducing their dairy intake”.

The vegan alternative was developed in response to “growing public demand” for plant-based cheese alternatives, the company told The Grocer. The cheese brand cited research by Upfield that revealed more than two thirds or 68% of British consumers had considered a transition to a vegan diet.

“We’ve seen overwhelming demand for the development of a vegan-friendly Babybel over the years, and with the plant-based market continuing to grow substantially, the new launch is perfectly timed to meet this consumer appetite,” Bel’s brand manager Ollie Richmond told The Grocer.
