Aldi trials plastic tray removal to cut 116 tonnes of plastic annually

Aldi has announced it is trialling the removal of all plastic trays from its whole fresh chickens nationwide, in a bid to further reduce unnecessary plastic.

If successful, the trial will reduce the amount of plastic used by an average of 66 per cent and eliminate 116 tonnes of plastic annually if successful.

The move comes as Aldi has pledged to halve the volume of plastic packaging it uses by 2025, which will see the German discount retailer eliminate 74,000 tonnes of plastic from circulation.

The trial of the change to Aldi’s whole fresh chicken packaging follows the removal of single-use plastic from all own-label tea bags.

This year, Aldi has also banned plastic egg packaging and plastic straws from all own-brand drink cartons.

We are committed to reducing plastic and unnecessary packaging wherever possible, while still offering the highest-quality products at the lowest prices,” Aldi plastics and packaging director Richard Gorman said.

“We’re always looking for ways to help our customers to shop even more sustainably at Aldi, and plan to have all of our products in reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging by 2025.”

All of Aldi’s core range of fresh meat is from British, Red Tractor-approved farms.

The news comes as Aldi announced it is removing all plastic packaging from its entire wooden toy range.

The German-discount retailer’s upcoming Specialbuy range includes 26 different items, including wooden medical carts and pirate ships, and is available in stores from Sunday, while stocks last.
