Sainsbury’s has launched its first airport store at Edinburgh airport, as part of a major revamp to the food, drink and shopping options for passengers.

The grocery retailer’s new convenience store is located before security with multiple customer entrances and will be open 24 hours a day, to provide service for customers passing through both arrivals and departures at Edinburgh Airport.

Offerings will include a range of meal deals, fresh bread and cakes baked daily in-store, fruit and veg, meat, fish and meal ranges, as well as a bespoke Scottish section showcasing locally sourced favourites.

Customers will also be available to use the store’s new Click & Collect service, allowing them to order online from Sainsbury’s, Habitat and Tu Clothing for collection.

The new store, which comes as the latest addition to the supermarket chain’s existing 100 stores in Scotland, will be run by a team of 26 colleagues and will include Sainsbury’s partnership with surplus food redistribution service Neighbourly, allowing food to be donated to local charities.

Sainsbury’s director of property, procurement and EV Ventures said: “We’re very excited to launch Sainsbury’s Local in a whole new setting for the first time today with the opening of our Edinburgh Airport store.

“We want to build on the resounding success of our other travel hub stores, for example in UK train stations, and we’ll be listening closely to feedback from customers in the coming weeks to learn more about what they want to see from this kind of Local.

“We then hope to bring Sainsbury’s unbeatable combination of outstanding value, quality food and great service to more airport locations in the UK.”

The new store opening comes as many of the UK’s leading supermarkets have launched a slew of new convenience stores, expanding their network and investing in real estate in a bid to win over local shoppers.
