Tesco’s most senior marketer, group customer director Emma Botton, has quit the business after more than 7 years.

It is unclear is whether Botton will be directly replaced. Tesco chief commercial officer Ashwin Prasad told colleagues he would “share more information shortly in relation to how [the business] will lead [its] customer marketing agenda” in an internal memo seen by Marketing Week.

Botton joined Britain’s largest supermarket in 2016 as marketing communications director before being promoted to group brand, proposition and marketing communications director in 2021.

She became Tesco’s most senior marketer when chief customer officer Alessandra Bellini stepped down last year, which led to a restructure in the marketing team.

Bellini’s role was not directly replaced, and Botton was promoted to group customer director.

Prasad said Botton had helped rebuild the Tesco brand as part of its turnaround and was the an “initial architect” of the supermarket’s long-running ‘Food Love Stories’ campaign.

He also said she played a “key role” in bringing promotions like Clubcard Prices and the Aldi Price Match initiative to life.

Botton wrote in the memo: “I’ve always believed in the power of putting the customer at the heart of the conversation as the essential catalyst for growth and creative solutions and I’m so proud of the work I’ve contributed to.

“After eight years, I want to progress in a new direction. I’m excited about what the future holds and the opportunities that lie ahead.”
