Aldi’s £16 gin beats premium rivals to be named ‘best in Britain’

News

Aldi’s £16.49 own-brand gin has been named the best classic gin in Britain at the World Drinks Awards 2026.

The discounter’s Specially Selected Haysmith’s London Dry Gin picked up the “Best in Country” title, beating premium brands including Beefeater, Hawkridge and Hawkstone.

Aldi said it was the only UK supermarket to receive a country winner title for gin at this year’s awards.

The retailer said the win underlined its value credentials, with its Haysmith’s gin costing up to 48 per cent less than some rival branded bottles.

The 70cl gin is described as having notes of fresh juniper and citrus, with a subtle spiced finish designed for a classic G&T or cocktails.

Aldi UK chief commercial officer Julie Ashfield said: “We are thrilled that our Specially Selected Haysmith’s London Dry Gin has been recognised as the best in the country.

“To be the only supermarket awarded such a high honour for our gin is a real testament to the work of our supplier partners in creating a product that’s of phenomenal quality and amazing value for our customers.

“This award is not just a win for Aldi, but for every gin-lover who wants to enjoy an outstanding G&T without breaking the bank.”

Two of Aldi’s flavoured gins also picked up silver medals at the awards.

Its Specially Selected Haysmith’s Seville Orange & Persian Lime Gin, priced at £14.99, was recognised by judges, while the retailer’s Rhubarb & Ginger Gin, also £14.99, was praised for its fresh rhubarb notes, tart lemon and warming ginger finish.

Aldi’s Haysmith’s gin range is available in stores nationwide.
