Air fryer sales have risen by 200% year-on-year at Tesco as its shoppers look for the most energy efficient and cost-effective ways to cook.
To meet the expected demand over the Christmas period, the Big 4 grocer has scheduled an additional 40,000 air fryers to hit its supermarkets shelves, on top of its previous order which it says was one of the largest to date.
Iceland’s managing director Richard Walker tweeted on Monday that it would also need to stock up on its orders of the cooking appliance, as it “had 20,000 and will have sold out within days.”
This comes following the frozen food retailer’s research with energy provider Utilita in September which found air fryers to be one of the cheapest appliances to use, saving customers over £3 on each meal.
At Tesco, its own-label Go Cook air fryer was found to be purchased quickest by shoppers as it revealed the appliance was most popular in Essex where sales more than doubled in comparison to Greater London.
“We’ve been blown away by just how popular air fryers are proving with our customers – so much so that we’ve ordered even more of them to cope with demand in the run up to Christmas,” Tesco home electricals category manager, Noel Jackson said.
“With sales tripling since last year, our customers are increasingly looking for a healthy, efficient and quick way to cook their favourite meals with minimal fuss.”
In a bid to help its customers save more when using an air fryer, Tesco has also launched a dedicated recipe guide including meals such as Salt and Pepper Chicken wings and Chunky Chips made using the appliance in less than 20 minutes and from £1.35 per portion.
