Swaps to own-label ranges to save Britons £15.1 bn a year

Kantar data has revealed that British households could save up to £542 a year by swapping from branded products to Big 4 or discounter ranges.

According to analysis by Kantar data, British shoppers could be spending a combined total of £15.1 billion a year for branded items instead of Aldi’s exclusive own-label products.

Additionally, the data revealed a gap in the price of Big 4 own-label items compared to discounter own-label goods.

The Grocer’s recent analysis showed that customers could save £324 a year by swapping 33 items from Big 4 own-label products to Aldi’s own-label products.

The data comes as inflation has hit a 40-year high with a CPI of 9.1%.

With food inflation hitting 8.6%, the BRC recognised that households and businesses would continue to feel the squeeze from rising prices – as “higher energy prices, a tight labour market and increasing transport and commodity costs filter through to consumers.”

“People are facing difficult choices about how they spend their money and are changing the way they shop to stretch budgets as far as possible,” Aldi UK and Ireland CEO Giles Hurley said.

“Shoppers are switching from brands to own-label products because they know they are often the same or better in terms of quality and taste. It costs a lot of money to market a mainstream brand, but you don’t have to pay for this when you buy a better value own-label alternative.”
