M&S revives iconic 1980s chocolate bars under St Michael brand
M&S Food has announced that it is to bring four ‘iconic’ discontinued chocolate bars back to shelves.
Sparks, Jet, Now! and Coconut Grove launched across M&S Foodhalls on 22 July, priced at £1 each. The products feature Fairtrade milk chocolate and packaging inspired by their original St Michael designs.
Sparks combines soft nougat and caramel, while Jet contains nougat, peanuts and caramel. Now! features a biscuit and soft caramel centre, and Coconut Grove is filled with soft coconut.
The recipes are positioned as M&S alternatives to established confectionery products including Mars, Snickers, Twix and Bounty.
Their return follows the relaunch of Take 4, the retailer’s four-finger chocolate wafer bar, which M&S said received a strong response after returning last winter.
An M&S Food spokesperson said: “After the brilliant response to the return of Take 4 last year, we wanted to dig a little deeper into our archives and revisit more of the chocolate bars customers loved the first time around.
“With their original St Michael packaging designs and flavours inspired by the much-loved bars of the 80s, Jet, Sparks, Now! and Coconut Grove are a delicious nod to the past – giving some customers the chance to rediscover an old favourite and others the joy of trying them for the very first time.”
M&S used the St Michael name across its products from 1927 before retiring the label in 2000.
The heritage brand began regaining attention in 2021 as vintage St Michael clothing grew in popularity on second-hand marketplaces, prompting M&S to revive it for selected fashion products.
M&S is continuing to expand its own-label food proposition and target more family shopping occasions. The retailer said it attracted 802,000 additional Food customers over the past year, almost half of whom were families.
