In a bid to help families facing financial pressure during the school holidays, John Lewis Partnership is working with Trussell and its Summer Support Fund.

On top of its annual donation to the charity, the retailer said this summer funding boost would support children facing poverty with access to nutritious meals, free holiday clubs and activities.

Additionally, the donation will help food banks provide emergency food, practical support and welcoming spaces for families seeking advice and community support.

It comes as food banks respond to rising demand over the summer period, when families can face added pressure as children are away from school.

“Summer should be a carefree time for children so we are proud to offer additional support to Trussell,” said Marija Rompani, director of ethics and sustainability at the John Lewis Partnership. “They do vital work in communities across the UK all year round but no-one should miss out on fun or food during the school holidays.”

This latest funding will support projects across the UK, including a food bank in Wales providing food and activities during the school holidays, a packed lunch scheme in England, and support for families with school-aged children across Scotland.

Joanna Freeborough, head of partnerships at Trussell, commented: “We are incredibly grateful for John Lewis Partnership’s support towards our Summer Support Fund. This donation will help close the gap when support can be hardest to find for families – helping young people thrive and stay ready for the next school year.

“This is not just about food. It is about ensuring children are able to enjoy their summer with dignity, health and hope – not hunger – and with your support, we can ensure that when school’s out, hunger doesn’t have to take its place.”

John Lewis Partnership has supported Trussell for 15 years. On top of its donation, customers can also donate at Waitrose & Partners. Last year, the retailer, its customers and suppliers generated over £700,000 to help Trussell carry out “their vital work”.
