Sainsbury’s cuts ribbon on new Burnham-on-Crouch store
Sainsbury’s latest store in Burnham-on-Crouch, located on Foundry Lane, opened its doors to shoppers on Friday 30 October on the site of the former East of England Co-op.
The new 15,547 square foot store is now open from 7am to 10pm Monday to Saturday, and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
There’s a dedicated Click and Collect point inside the store, enabling customers to order from Argos, Habitat and Tu Clothing online and collect while picking up their groceries.
The ribbon cutting ceremony also included two long-serving Co-op colleagues who are now part of the new Sainsbury’s. The colleagues, Roger Thurgood and Sue Hobden, have worked at the site for 39 and 37 years respectively.
Sainsbury’s colleagues presented the first 500 customers into the store with limited-edition canvas bags, designed by pupils at St Mary’s Primary School and Burnham Primary School after they were set the challenge of designing a bag-for-life that would celebrate Sainsbury’s arrival in the town.
Sainsbury’s is in the third year of its plan to bring more of its food range to more customers in more locations. As part of this, the retailer continues to open many more new Sainsbury’s supermarkets in towns like Burnham-on-Crouch that didn’t previously have one, putting its winning combination of value, quality, availability and service within easier reach of more people throughout the UK.

Jo Bojas, Sainsbury’s Burnham-on-Crouch store manager, said: “It’s wonderful to open our doors and see so many people from Burnham-on-Crouch enjoying their new store for the first time. A fantastic team of people have worked hard to get our store ready to open, so I’d like to say a big thank you from me to everyone who has played a part in today’s success.
“We already feel like we’re a part of the community here – our team is made up of many colleagues from the previous store and we’ve taken part in several initiatives prior to opening, including supporting the Maldon & District CVS social supermarket and sponsoring Burnham-on-Crouch Carnival.
“Having the Mayor open the supermarket alongside Roger and Sue, who have 76 years of service between them, was a privilege and we’re looking forward to serving people in our new supermarket for years to come.”
Additionally, Sainsbury’s has reunited with the BFG for its 2026 Christmas advert, marking the third year the Roald Dahl character has featured in the supermarket’s festive campaign.
