Chelmsford Star Co-operative votes to merge with Central Co-op

Members of Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society have officially approved the proposed merger with Central Co-op, with the new deal now confirmed to move forward.

The joint merger will create more financial stability for the two businesses, with an estimated turnover of almost £1bn.

In a joint statement, Tony Price, president of Chelmsford Star Co-operative, and Elaine Dean, president of Central Co-op, said: “This marks an important step for our Societies in creating greater long-term security.

“The transfer will protect Members’ assets and ensure that they continue to have a voice as part of a stronger, more secure society, ready to serve their communities for many more years to come.”

Chelmsford Star will continue to operate under its banner, while all members and employees will become part of the Central Co-op.

The proposal was first announced in June, subject to approval from Chelmsford Star’s members.

Debbie Robinson, CEO of Central Co-op, added: “We’re pleased to welcome Chelmsford Star into Central Co-op. This transfer is a significant step forward for both Societies, reinforcing the strength of co-operation in action.

“It enables us to grow in scale and stability while staying true to our shared values. We’re committed to working closely with Chelmsford Star Members and colleagues to ensure a smooth and respectful transition, one that secures long-term sustainability and allows us to continue making a real difference in the communities we serve.”

Central Co-op and Chelmsford Star Co-op expect to complete the transfer deal by 15 September.
