Waitrose has launched a new “last-minute” travel money service in 100 of its stores nationwide, offering shoppers the chance to pick up euros and dollars while completing their weekly food shop.

Customers can now collect pre-packed bundles of €250 or $250 from the welcome desks at participating stores, with a cap of two wallets per customer.

The retailer’s initiative is designed to make holiday preparation more convenient, especially for those doing a last-minute shop before travelling.

The “Travel Money to Go” service complements the existing bureau de change facilities at Waitrose’s sister brand, John Lewis.

It comes at a time when supermarkets are increasingly blending retail and financial services to drive footfall and convenience.

John Lewis Financial Services head of FX Matt Richardson, said: “Our new travel money service means customers can collect their holiday money from 100 Waitrose stores at the same time as buying their last minute tea bags and other travel essentials.”

The FX launch follows a string of recent initiatives by the retailer including the return of its free coffee perk for loyalty members and the rollout of its ‘Waitrose Delivery Pass’ subscription service earlier this month.
