Asda is cutting prices on 1,500 products in-store and online, adding fuel to mounting fears of a grocery price war.

The latest wave of Rollback price cuts means that nearly 10,000 products – almost a third of the supermarket giant’s entire range – has been reduced in price since the proposition was first introduced at the end of January.

The most recent reductions span multiple categories, with featured products including Dairylea Dunkers, Philadelphia Soft Cheese, Cathedral City Standard Cheddar, Clover Butter Spread, Persil Capsules, and Asda own-brand Little Angels Nappies, offering savings of up to 45%.

Asda executive chairman Allan Leighton said: “Last week we signalled again our absolute commitment to lowering prices for customers and today we’re further delivering on that promise.

“By rolling back prices on thousands more products we’re making it even easier for our customers to save. Nearly 10,000 products have now been rolled back and we will continue to invest in lowering prices across the rest of the year and beyond. “

Last week, rival supermarkets Tesco, Sainsbury’s and M&S suffered a £3.5bn hit to their shares after City sources warned that a supermarket price war is looming.

Fears were sparked after Leighton said that Asda is “beginning to see incremental improvements in our price gap“ and as the grocer warned of softer profits in the year ahead, as it embarks on a “substantive and well backed programme of investment in price, availability and the shopping experience” to regain customer trust.

Allan Leighton needs to invest in store hours both on the shop floor and back of house. We can’t sell what is sitting in the warehouse because you don’t have the staff in place to work it.

Investment is also needed in infrastructure stores are looking dirty and in need of simple maintenance.

Also asda have isolated the older generation with the use of the rewards app not everyone is clued up on technology.

Fresh fruit and veg needs addressed too.

I hope Alans master plan works

I agree. Asda is more concerned in cutting staff hours instead of making sure the shelves are stocked up.
