Aldi is donating more than 100 fridges to food charities and foodbanks across the UK this winter in a bid to provide support through extra storage.

The discounter’s repurposed fridges will be given to charities such as surplus food redistribution organisations Neighbourly, FareShare and City Harvest, with additional fridges to be donated in the New Year.

The move would mean Aldi’s fridges and freezers could allow the charities to expand the range and volume of food products they can stock, providing greater accessibility to nutritious food for those in need.

Aldi national sustainability director Luke Emery said: “Winter is a busy period for foodbanks and other charitable organisations that support those most in need.

“At Aldi, our aim is for fresh, healthy food to be accessible to all, and we know that food storage can often be an issue for these charitable organisations.

“We’re proud to be working on this initiative with our redistribution partners, which runs alongside our ongoing surplus food donation programme in stores across the UK.”

The supermarket giant’s actions follow its pledge to donate over 2,000 Christmas lunches and one million meals this festive period to those in low-income areas across the UK.
