Aldi own-label baked beans have been chosen as the consumer favourite in a new ranking, beating popular big-name brands.
According to a Which? blind taste test of 66 consumers rating baked beans from Heinz and Branston, alongside supermarket own-brands including Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco, discounter Aldi’s Bramwells baked beans received the highest score of 76%.
The consumer watchdog said the product was awarded high marks for appearance, aroma and strength of flavour, while 80% said the texture of the beans was “just right”.
Branston baked beans came in at a close second with a score of 75% as 89% of taste testers were impressed by the texture of the tomato sauce.

Other highly ranked options included Co-op and Asda’s baked beans, receiving scores of 74% and 73%, respectively.
Heinz Beanz took a score of 72% as most tasters were satisfied with the strength of flavour, however didn’t like the aroma as much as rivals and just over a third thought the sauce was too thin.
Waitrose also scored 72%, followed by Sainsbury’s at 71% and Tesco at 70%.
Morrisons and M&S were found to be the lowest ranked for baked beans of those included in the taste test, with scores of 68% and 67%, respectively.
Although two thirds of tasters liked the texture of Morrisons beans, around half weren’t sold on the flavour or level of sweetness, while the consumers also liked the texture of the baked beans at M&S but a third wanted them to taste sweeter.
It follows Which?’s blind taste test of 12 teas from supermarkets and brands earlier this month, which saw Asda’s own-label tea bags taking the top spot.
