Ocado chief executive Hannah Gibson said it has seen shoppers switching from a range of retailers to the online supermarket as its sales soared in its last quarter, highlighting particular gains from Tesco and the discounters.

Gibson said: “We’ve seen gains from people switching from all different retailers, but also switching from online. We’ve seen switching from Tesco now consistently for 12 months in a row, and we’ve also seen switching from some of the discounters as well.”

“When I look at the new customers coming into Ocado, we are seeing a really wide range of ages, a wide range of incomes, a wide range of geographies, a wide range of retailers they’re coming from and I think that’s encouraging looking forward, because it does mean that we are appealing to really broad range of customers.”

The supermarket, which saw sales grow by 15.5% to £658m in the quarter to 1 September, also saw a 10.3% year on year rise in active customers to 1.06 million.

Gibson explained: “We’ve got the choice, we’ve got service, but we continue to improve our value and be more accessible and appeal to many different consumers.”

Last month, Ocado launched its sixth round of price cuts since June 2023, rolling out “significant” savings on products across big-name branded goods, smaller challenger brands and the M&S food and drink range.

It comes as Ocado has once again been named the fastest growing supermarket for the past 12 weeks, with sales up 15.4%, according to the latest data from NIQ.
